Street Seen

The Blurb Book, 2016

In January of 2016 I created a final piece for my Photography A Level in the form of a Blurb book based on the North West coast of Wales. I was just beginning to discover street photography and collected over 3000 photos in the space of 5 months before designing things like layouts, covers and titles. It was my love of Henri Cartier-Bresson that inspired my cover photo as it just reminded me of that small boy in Cartier-Bresson's image walking through Paris with a bottle of wine in his hand. We didn't know who he was but the expression on his face just resonated with us for some reason, much like this image. My journey started in Bangor, North Wales and ended in Manchester and includes scenes from events such as Llandudno and Manchester's Christmas Markets, UCAS events, lantern parades through Conwy, and various food festivals throughout the seasons. I used a method called 'shooting from the hip' in which you do not look through the viewfinder to capture your images but rather, trust your timing and framing and click the shutter with the camera hanging naturally from the neck strap or, as suggested, in your hand at your hip. This method is one of my favourites to use when shooting for street photography briefs because people tend to alter the way they're standing, what their doing and the way they look at you when they see a camera pointed at them. The beauty of the street photograph is in the natural, unscripted scenes, the conversations that you catch, the facial expressions and the various exchanges you get to see between people that wouldn't have existed had you held your camera to your face. It is the most real and honest form of photography there is in my opinion.
