Conwy Camera Club

For a number of years, I worked in a hotel in North Wales where my boss was also a member of the Conwy Camera Club. I accompanied him on the occasional trip out with our cameras but we were able to use the clubs equipment. The shoots ranged from things like working with models in churches and forests to working with dogs and macro lenses. I learned a lot about how to work with people more than anything and how to communicate best with your models and keep people happy and comfortable while shooting on location.

Conwy Camera Club

In October 2016 I was commissioned by the children's book author Heather Dyer to take some photographs of her for her new book coming out in the following January. We met that morning to discuss what kind of images she was looking to get out of the experience before I took her around the town to locations that I thought would suit her brief. Being still at college at the time, I didn't have any portable studio equipment of my own which actually suited the situation as she was after light-hearted and less serious images so I wasn't even using my flash guns much that day either only relying on natural light.

Portraits

Portraits

Besides working for Heather Dyer in 2016, there have been a few opportunities for me to work with other people since, for example, the Conwy Camera Club, but also during my time at university. Portraiture and working with models is not something that I would usually find myself doing, being a documentary photographer, but that's not to say that I don't enjoy it from time to time. I enjoy the university briefs that force me to step out of my comfort zone and pick up a digital camera for once and to start using the studios again. Most of these images were the result of a university brief at some point while others, a college brief in 2016.

Landscapes

Landscapes

For years I've been using my free time to go out with my cameras and photograph the beautiful landscapes that surround my home town. It's still something I love to do today despite having found my way into documentary practices. During college and university, I have greatly developed my skills in Photoshop and knowledge of things like metering, bracketing and ISO capabilities so my photographs since I first took up the subject, have developed, improved and with them I can now make higher-quality prints and on a larger scale too. Prints that have been selling well and made appearances in a few exhibitions.
